Cabo Frio prepares for extreme weather due to El Niño
Authorities in Cabo Frio are preparing for extreme weather conditions driven by a strong El Niño phenomenon. The municipal Civil Defense met with the Rio de Janeiro State Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts (CEMADEN-RJ) to coordinate preventive actions for the upcoming summer season.
The current El Niño is classified as very strong, with Pacific Ocean surface temperatures approximately 2.4 °C above historical averages. While total rainfall volume for the period between November 2026 and January 2027 is expected to remain within historical norms, experts warn of a high probability of severe, concentrated storms. These events may cause flooding, urban mobility issues, and damage to homes in vulnerable areas, alongside persistent heatwaves and wind gusts.
