Cabo San Lucas authorities thwart telephone extortion attempt

Authorities in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, successfully thwarted a telephone extortion attempt targeting a local family. On the night of August 22, a mother in the Caribe Bajo neighborhood reported receiving calls from a number with a Guadalajara area code, claiming her 14-year-old son had been kidnapped. The callers demanded a monetary deposit to ensure the minor's safety.

In response, the State Attorney General's Office (PGJE) and the Subprocuraduría de Atención a Delitos de Alto Impacto (SADAI) coordinated with municipal police to locate the teenager. Investigators managed to establish contact with the minor via text message, informing him that he was the subject of a hoax. The adolescent was able to confirm his location, contact his family directly, and reunite with them unharmed.

The PGJE has urged the public to remain vigilant against such scams, advising citizens to hang up immediately when receiving suspicious calls, avoid making deposits, and report any extortion attempts to the authorities.
