Cabo Verde football team faces sporting and disciplinary crisis

The Cabo Verde national football team is facing a dual crisis involving poor competitive results and off-field controversy during their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The team suffered two consecutive defeats, losing 3-1 to Mali and 2-1 to Rwanda, which has significantly complicated their chances of advancing in Group J.

Adding to the sporting slump, a video circulated on social media showing several players attending a party in the capital following the loss to Mali. The incident drew widespread criticism, particularly as players from the opposing Rwandan team were also present at the same venue.

This period of instability follows the team's high-profile performances during the 2026 World Cup cycle. Currently, head coach Humberto Bettencourt is facing pressure from fans demanding his resignation due to the team's declining performance and recent errors, including specific criticism directed at goalkeeper Vozinha.
