Cabo Verde prepares for presidential elections and AOSIS leadership
Cabo Verde is preparing for its presidential elections on November 15, featuring key candidates José Maria Neves and Joana Rosa. Neves has proposed a ‘Cabo Verde 2050’ forum to discuss the nation's future, addressing challenges such as youth opportunities and the mobilization of the diaspora. He emphasized his experience in building political bridges and maintaining institutional balance.
Joana Rosa, the former Minister of Justice and the first woman to run for president in the country, is campaigning on a platform of competence and proximity. Supported by the Movement for Democracy (MpD), she aims to foster dialogue between the government, civil society, and the public to address issues like international economic instability and fuel costs.
On the international stage, Foreign Minister Manuel Amante da Rosa announced that Cabo Verde will lead the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) in 2027 and 2028. The nation intends to prioritize climate change discussions, focusing on water and food resilience, connectivity, and innovative financing mechanisms such as debt-for-climate swaps.
