Cabo Verde schools face LGBTI+ prejudice amid new training efforts

LGBTI+ individuals in Cabo Verde continue to face significant prejudice and bullying within the school system, according to personal accounts from citizens. Edilson da Graça, a 25-year-old transgender man, recounted severe physical assaults and psychological trauma experienced during his basic and secondary education. He noted that while some teachers provided support, others participated in mockery.

Matias Antunes, 49, also shared experiences of being targeted for his sexual orientation during his school years. In response to these ongoing issues, institutions in the country are preparing new training initiatives aimed at combating prejudice and fostering respect for diversity. Advocates emphasize the need for formal school regulations and legal protections to safeguard students from discrimination.
