Caborca inaugurates first monument dedicated to women miners

The municipality of Caborca, Sonora, has inaugurated the first monument dedicated to women miners in Mexico and Latin America. The sculpture, created by artist Marlon Balderrama Monge, stands over eight meters tall including its pedestal and weighs approximately one ton.

Unveiled during the Fourth National Meeting of Authentic Women Miners, the monument is inspired by Maritza Janet Mazón del Cid, a 33-year-old miner from Sonora. Unlike traditional mining depictions, the contemporary design features a worker equipped with a helmet, boots, communication radio, and safety gear to reflect modern roles in technical tasks, process supervision, and decision-making.

The project was a collaborative effort involving Minera Penmont, the Sindicato Nacional Minero Metalúrgico Frente, and various local institutions. Located at the intersection of Álvaro Obregón and Sonora avenues, the installation is part of a broader urban intervention including road improvements, lighting, and infrastructure upgrades to create a new landmark for the mining-centric municipality.
