Cabozantinib and immunotherapy combination improves advanced renal cancer survival
Medical specialists have identified a new therapeutic alternative for patients with advanced renal carcinoma by combining the drug cabozantinib with immunotherapy. During a medical seminar organized by the pharmaceutical group Adium in Panama City, oncologist Javier Molina Cerrillo from Madrid’s Hospital Ramón y Cajal noted that this combination significantly improves survival rates.
Cabozantinib works by inhibiting key proteins associated with tumor growth and angiogenesis. When administered alongside the immunotherapy drug nivolumab, the treatment enhances the immune system's response to better control disease progression.
In Central America, cabozantinib is approved for advanced renal carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer. For neuroendocrine tumors, regulatory approval is currently pending in El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua.
