Cabrales cheese sets new world record at 37,500 euro auction

A piece of Cabrales cheese has set a new world record, selling at auction for 37,500 euros. This marks the highest price achieved in the 54-year history of the competition held in Arenas de Cabrales, Asturias.

The winning piece, named ‘La montera picona’, was produced by the Ángel Díaz Herrero creamery in Tielve. It weighed over two kilograms and underwent nine months of maturation in natural caves within the Picos de Europa. The winning bid was placed by the Gijón-based restaurant ‘La montera picona’, which will share the prize with three participating establishments from Madrid: ‘Carlos Tartiere’, ‘Lo de Viole’, and ‘Sidrería La Cuenca’.

This auction result surpasses last year’s record of 37,000 euros. The winning producer, Ángel Díaz Herrero, has been selected by the jury as the best among fourteen participating producers for the third consecutive year.
