Cachaça gains international recognition as Brazil celebrates National Cachaça Day
Brazil celebrates National Cachaça Day on September 13, marking the historical date in 1661 when Queen Luísa de Gusmão legalized the production and sale of the spirit following the Revolta da Cachaça.
Originating in the 16th century from sugarcane fermentation, cachaça has transitioned from a stigmatized beverage to a regulated national symbol. Modern producers, such as Vibra Brasil from the Cerrado Mineiro region, are working to position the spirit in the premium international market. Vibra Brasil has recently earned several global accolades, including gold and silver medals at the Frankfurt International Trophy and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, as well as a design award at the World Drinks Awards.
By integrating regional identity, gastronomy, and sophisticated design, new generations of Brazilian brands aim to elevate cachaça to the same international cultural status held by spirits like tequila or whisky.
