Cachar College student unrest follows dress code dispute
Violence erupted at Cachar College in Silchar following a dispute over the institution's dress code policy. The conflict, which involved members of student unions ABVP and NSUI, escalated into a physical altercation that left at least three students, including a female, injured and hospitalized.
The unrest was reportedly triggered by allegations from ABVP that students were violating the prescribed uniform policy by wearing hijabs and Islamic traditional caps. During a membership drive by NSUI, tensions between the groups led to heated arguments and fisticuffs. In response, Principal Apratim Nag vowed that the college would strictly enforce the dress code and stated that an internal disciplinary committee would investigate the incident.
MLA Jubair Anam Mazumder has called for enhanced security measures around the campus to ensure student safety. He emphasized that while he does not oppose a uniform, the rules must be applied uniformly and without discrimination against any specific community or religion. Local police have intervened to control the situation and have been requested to deploy personnel to prevent further violence.
