Cachoeira hosts conclusion of Festa da Boa Morte

The Festa da Boa Morte, a religious celebration in Cachoeira, Bahia, is concluding its programming this Monday. Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bahia since 2010, the event is organized by the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, an Afro-Catholic brotherhood.

The festival holds significant historical importance, as the brotherhood was founded by Black women who worked to purchase the freedom of enslaved individuals. The annual celebrations, which have occurred since the 19th century, honor those who gained liberty through the organization's efforts.

The event draws substantial tourism to the Recôncavo Baiano region, attracting international visitors from Africa, Europe, and North America. Organizers expect more than 30,000 visitors this year, with many local hotels and inns reporting full occupancy.
