Cadillac to open F1 engine factory in North Carolina
General Motors has announced that its new Formula 1 engine factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, will officially open on December 18. The facility is part of the company's expansion following FIA approval to become a power unit supplier starting in the 2029 season.
General Motors President Mark Reuss stated that development is progressing well, though the company faces a complex timeline. While GM aims to debut its own power unit in 2029, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed interest in returning to V8 engines by 2031, which could reduce the competitive lifespan of GM's current hybrid technology.
Currently, Cadillac operates as a customer team using Ferrari power units. The team has faced a difficult debut season, remaining the only outfit without points in the 2026 championship and recording slow qualifying times with the MAC-26 chassis. Reuss emphasized the need for specialized engineers and drivers to build the team's competitiveness from the ground up.
