Cadoneghe Mayor faces backlash over suspended citizenship oath

A controversy has erupted in Cadoneghe, Italy, following the decision by Mayor Marco Schiesaro to interrupt the citizenship oath of a Moroccan woman. Despite the woman having resided in Italy for fifteen years and possessing a B1 language certification, the Mayor suspended the ceremony, claiming she was unable to independently understand or respond to simple questions in Italian.

Ali Scek Nur, a Somali-born physician and representative of the Islamic community in Padua, has strongly criticized the decision. In a video shared by the Mayor himself, Scek Nur described the incident as “scandalous” and used harsh language, including terms such as “scoundrel” and “coward,” to address the Mayor. Scek Nur argued that the administration should have utilized a legal interpreter or the woman’s husband to facilitate the process.

The incident has sparked significant political debate, with Scek Nur suggesting that the Mayor’s actions represent a failure of leadership and calling for unity under the Italian flag rather than nationalism.
