Caerphilly transport project faces opposition over historic building demolition

Plans for a £33 million transport interchange in Caerphilly have met opposition due to the proposed demolition of a 111-year-old Victorian railway ticket office. The project, led by Caerphilly County Borough Council and Transport for Wales, aims to replace existing facilities with an integrated two-storey hub made of glass, stone, and metal.

Planners argue the current 1913 structure and its bridge suffer from structural corrosion and fail to meet modern accessibility, safety, and environmental standards. However, local campaigners and Senedd Member Lindsay Whittle are advocating for the building's preservation, noting it is one of the town's few remaining historic structures from that era. Whittle has met with Deputy Transport Minister Mark Hooper to discuss potential amendments that could incorporate the historic office into the new development.
