CAF holds strategic conference in Cape Verde to advance African football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) held a strategic conference in Santa Maria, Cape Verde, from October 7 to 9, focusing on the future development of football on the continent. Attended by leaders from 54 member associations, national coaches, and international figures including FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA Director of Football Development Arsène Wenger, the summit aimed to build on the successful performance of African teams during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized the need to bridge the gap between strategic planning and concrete action, calling for increased investment in infrastructure, coach training, youth academies, and financial autonomy for federations. The ultimate goal discussed was to prepare an African nation to win the FIFA World Cup by 2030.

Arsène Wenger expressed optimism regarding this goal, noting that data shows the performance gap between African teams and those from Europe or South America is narrowing. Additionally, former player and coach Patrick Vieira contributed to the discussions by highlighting the importance of player recovery, nutrition, and collective team building as essential components for competing at the highest global level.
