CAF considers returning Africa Cup of Nations to biennial cycle

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reconsidering its decision to move the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle. During a strategic conference in Cape Verde, CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed that returning to the traditional biennial (every two years) format is currently under review by the executive committee.

In December 2025, CAF had announced a shift to a four-year cycle starting after the 2028 edition, intended to align the African football calendar with FIFA and reduce scheduling conflicts for players in European clubs. However, this move faced significant criticism from various stakeholders who argued it could lead to 'economic suicide' and a loss of visibility and revenue for national federations.

Motsepe emphasized that the organization is examining all options to protect African interests, stating, “We are looking at everything, including having the AFCON coming back every two years.” No final decision has been reached, but the potential reversal marks a major shift in the continent's football governance strategy.
