CAF consults members on AFCON frequency and announces club draws
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a consultation with its 54 member associations to decide the future frequency of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Member nations must submit their positions by Wednesday, October 28, regarding whether the tournament should remain on a biennial (two-year) cycle or transition to a four-year cycle.
While CAF President Patrice Motsepe previously signaled a move to a four-year format starting in 2028 to align with the global calendar, the governing body is reassessing due to financial concerns. A shift to four years would require a new competition, such as the proposed Africa Nations League, to sustain revenue streams for member associations.
Separately, CAF has confirmed the group stage draws for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. The draws will take place on Wednesday, October 28, at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo. The Champions League draw will determine the opponents for 16 qualified clubs, including Espérance de Tunis and Pyramids FC, following the unexpected elimination of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns by Angola’s Wiliete SC.
