CAF leaders back Gianni Infantino and discuss football development

At a CAF strategic conference in Sal, Cape Verde, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that all 54 member associations unanimously support FIFA President Gianni Infantino for his 2027 re-election. Motsepe praised Infantino’s historical commitment to African football development.

During the discussions, Infantino highlighted that FIFA has invested over 1 billion dollars in Africa through 124 projects via the FIFA Forward program over the last decade. He also noted the strong performance of African teams in the 2026 World Cup.

Financial and structural changes were also a major focus. CAF aims to increase annual grants to its member associations from 700,000 to 1 million dollars. Additionally, the organization is reviewing the possibility of returning to a biennial schedule for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), reconsidering a previous decision to move to a four-year cycle.

The conference also included technical sessions featuring experts like Arsène Wenger, focusing on improving coaching, infrastructure, and the competitiveness of African national teams.
