CAF moves to expand African Champions League club entries

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is nearing approval of a proposal from Hani Abu Rida, president of the Egyptian Football Association, to increase the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League from the next season onward. While the original suggestion called for an extra slot for each member association in both the Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, CAF executives have limited the expansion to the Champions League only, leaving the Confederation Cup format unchanged.

The CAF Executive Committee has given preliminary backing, and the decision is expected to be formalised at an upcoming meeting chaired by CAF President Patrice Motsepe. A deadline for submitting club lists has been pushed to August, giving officials more time to finalize the new allocation rules, which will be based on association rankings and existing regulations.
