Café Nicola fire in Lisbon requires evacuation of nearby buildings

A fire broke out at the historic Café Nicola in Lisbon's Rossio district on Thursday afternoon. The alert was raised around 15:09, and firefighters successfully extinguished the flames by approximately 16:15.

Three employees were taken to the hospital as a precaution: two due to smoke inhalation and one for anxiety and a panic attack. One source reported a minor injury. As a safety measure, authorities evacuated a nearby building housing a Banco de Portugal canteen and an adjacent accommodation chain building.

Initial reports from staff suggest the fire may have started in a frying pan. While investigations are ongoing, authorities stated there is no risk of structural damage to the cafe or surrounding buildings, and the area remains safe for occupancy. Café Nicola, located in Praça D. Pedro IV, is a landmark institution in Lisbon with roots dating back to 1779.
