Caffeine consumption guidelines for breastfeeding mothers

Medical professionals generally agree that moderate caffeine consumption is safe for breastfeeding mothers, though caution regarding quantity and infant reaction is advised. Because small amounts of caffeine pass into breast milk, it is recommended that mothers monitor their total daily intake, particularly when caring for very young infants.

Doctors suggest limiting daily caffeine intake to a maximum of 300 milligrams. This is approximately equivalent to three cups of coffee or four cups of tea, though exact amounts vary based on the type and preparation of the beverage. Mothers should also account for caffeine found in soft drinks, energy drinks, and chocolate.

To minimize potential impacts on an infant's sleep or behavior, such as restlessness, it is recommended to avoid large amounts of caffeine in the late afternoon and evening. Monitoring the baby for changes in sleep patterns or increased irritability is advised.
