Caffeine's Dual Impact: Anxiety Risks from Coffee and Heart Benefits from Green Tea
Dr. Kunal Sood explains that caffeine in coffee can trigger anxiety by inhibiting adenosine, a brain chemical that promotes sleep. This heightened nervous system activity may cause rapid heartbeat, trembling, sweating and panic‑like sensations. He advises adults to keep intake below about 400 mg per day—roughly three to four cups—but notes that sensitive individuals may need to consume less, especially on an empty stomach or when sleep‑deprived.
Conversely, daily consumption of green tea provides several health advantages. Rich in antioxidants such as catechins and the amino acid L‑theanine, it may lower cancer risk, strengthen immunity, improve cognitive function, boost metabolism, support cardiovascular health, stabilize blood sugar, enhance skin condition, and promote a healthy gut microbiome. Health experts recommend one to two cups per day, steeped for five to ten minutes, to reap benefits without excess caffeine.
