Cagliari politicians clash over city administration and legacy
Political tensions have escalated in Cagliari following comments made by Mayor Massimo Zedda during a political event hosted by Matteo Renzi. Zedda claimed that the city was in a difficult state when he took office in 2019, contrasting it with the condition of the municipality when he previously left it in 2011. He asserted that his current administration has achieved a healthy municipal status with zero debt.
Paolo Truzzu, the leader of the Fratelli d'Italia group in the Regional Council and former mayor, responded sharply to these claims. Truzzu accused Zedda of attempting to deflect responsibility for the current state of the city by blaming previous administrations. He criticized the current administration's management of waste and urban projects, such as certain bike lanes.
The dispute also included personal jabs regarding a luxury watch Zedda received as a gift from the Sultan of Oman in 2012, which Truzzu referenced while criticizing Zedda's characterization of the city's condition.
