Cagliari Port worker killed in fatal cargo handling accident

A truck driver, identified as Carlo Spiga, died at the Porto Canale in Cagliari after being crushed by a load of pipes during cargo handling operations.

Following the incident, major labor unions including CGIL, CISL, and UIL have expressed deep concern and called for urgent action. The unions have written to the Sardinia Port Authority and Confindustria to demand a meeting and a thorough verification of all safety systems and procedures.

Union leaders emphasized that the death should not be viewed as a mere fatality but as evidence of systemic issues regarding health and safety in the port area. Simona Fanzecco of CGIL noted that a similar fatal accident occurred in the same area two years ago. UIL general secretary Fulvia Murru highlighted that there have been nine fatal workplace accidents in the region since the beginning of the year, averaging nearly one per month.

Regional Industry Councilor Emanuele Cani stated that the protection of workers' lives and health must remain an absolute priority.
