Caimanes del Sur: The history of San Cristóbal's former LIDOM franchise
The Caimanes del Sur, a baseball franchise based in San Cristóbal, remains a significant chapter in the history of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM). Established following the 1983 expansion, the team represented the first major effort to bring professional baseball to the southern region of the country.
During its five active seasons, which concluded with the 1988-89 championship, the team recorded 137 wins and 161 losses. While the franchise never won a national championship or a final series, it achieved three appearances in the semifinal rounds. The team played its home games at the Municipal Stadium, now known as the Estadio Temístocles Metz.
Notable players associated with the franchise include Rufino Linares, recognized as one of the era's most respected hitters, and pitcher Hilario Soriano.
