Cairngorms wildfire in Scotland ends major incident, residents return to Nethy Bridge
A wildfire burned for around ten days in Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park, forcing the evacuation of the highland village of Nethy Bridge on Friday night. More than 500 firefighters, dozens of fire appliances, two water‑bombing helicopters and bulldozers were deployed, and fire breaks were built around the community.
Police Scotland declared a major incident on Friday evening and lifted the declaration on Saturday night after the fire’s intensity receded. The Scottish Government’s Resilience Room confirmed that the number of hot spots was falling and that residents could safely return to their homes.
First Minister John Swinney publicly thanked emergency crews and announced that a request for UK military aerial support had been made; Justice Secretary Neil Gray later said the UK military does not have the required capability and that additional military help was not expected. The request remained unanswered. The ongoing response led to the cancellation of the Abernethy Highland Games, which were to be held in Nethy Bridge.
Local leaders and residents criticised the timing of the major‑incident declaration, saying it was declared too late and that communication from Edinburgh had been insufficient. Despite the criticism, officials stressed that the situation remained serious and that resources would stay in place until the blaze is fully extinguished.
