Cairns Mayor demands justice reform after fatal stolen vehicle crash

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden has called for systemic changes to the justice system following the death of 25-year-old Savannah Spence Paige. Paige was killed in a head-on collision on the Smithfield Bypass when a stolen utility vehicle struck her car.

The driver, a 36-year-old man who was on bail at the time of the incident, has been charged with manslaughter and several other offences. The tragedy has sparked community outrage and prompted Mayor Eden to question whether current bail laws and judicial processes are sufficient to protect citizens from repeat offenders.

Mayor Eden directed her comments toward the Queensland LNP Government, noting that frontline police officers have expressed frustration with a system that allows individuals to cycle repeatedly through the legal process without addressing the root causes of crime.
