Cairo Governor Opens $1 Billion Expansion of Al‑Hussein University Hospital

Governor Ibrahim Saber of Cairo inaugurated the second phase of a 1 billion EGP upgrade to Al‑Hussein University Hospital on 30 July 2026. The ceremony was attended by Dr Salama Daoud, president of Al‑Azhar University, Mohamed Sadik, chairman of the Urban Development Fund, and senior hospital officials.

The expansion adds outpatient clinics, raising the number from 36 to 74, and upgrades numerous internal departments, including orthopaedics, plastic surgery, burns, hepatology, gastroenterology, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery. New infrastructure includes an 8.8 MW power plant, a central camera system, and improved central air‑conditioning. Clinical equipment was boosted with a cardiac catheterisation unit (180 million EGP) and a linear accelerator for oncology (240 million EGP). Inpatient capacity was increased, with the collective‑care unit growing from 12 to 36 beds and a kidney‑dialysis block being prepared to house 68 machines.

Al‑Hussein University Hospital now totals 1 047 beds, 44 operating theatres and 98 intensive‑care rooms, serving roughly 37 000 patients annually, 69 % of whom are critical cases. The governor said the project follows President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi’s directives to modernise Egypt’s health system and improve free or state‑funded medical care.
