Cairo hosts third international conference on media literacy and global understanding
The third international conference, titled ‘Media and Information Literacy and Global Understanding: Peace for All’, has commenced in Cairo. The event aims to explore methods for enhancing media literacy and combating hate speech and extremism.
Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector at the League of Arab States, emphasized the importance of cooperation between Arab and international universities. He noted that previous iterations of the conference, held in April 2024 at the League of Arab States headquarters and in April 2025 in Barcelona, have successfully fostered dialogue between academics and media professionals.
The conference seeks to connect Arab media research centers with international counterparts to facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen the Arab perspective in global media literacy forums. Discussions also focus on the necessity of increasing media and information literacy amidst digital transformations to help individuals critically analyze content. Additionally, participants are addressing the need for mechanisms to limit harmful practices, particularly the negative use of artificial intelligence tools.
