Cairo Talks Near Deal on Mladenov Gaza Ceasefire Plan
Negotiations in Cairo involving Hamas, mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey are reported to be close to an agreement on the proposal presented by Nikolay Mladenov, the UN’s senior Gaza envoy. The draft includes provisions for a cease‑fire, a framework for handling Palestinian armed groups that preserves rather than removes weapons, and guarantees for civil‑service staff, with a legal committee to protect their rights. Under the plan, an international stabilization force and a technocratic committee would be deployed to Gaza, and Israel has signalled acceptance of the peace council’s entry, starting with temporary housing in Rafah. Hamas officials say they have accepted the wording and expect a public announcement in the coming days.
