Caivano employer arrested in fatal workplace accident investigation
An entrepreneur in Caivano has been placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet following the death of 61-year-old worker Salvatore Calignano. The incident occurred on October 2, when Calignano fell approximately eight meters from the roof of a warehouse while performing construction work alongside two other undocumented workers.
Investigations coordinated by the Naples North Prosecutor's Office revealed a total absence of safety equipment and precautions for working at heights. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies helped reconstruct the event, confirming that the victim fell during the work. Authorities also discovered that the 37-year-old employer attempted to cover up the irregular employment status by retroactively registering Calignano’s employment contract after the accident had already occurred.
The employer faces charges of manslaughter aggravated by the violation of safety regulations and the willful omission of workplace precautions. The owners of the warehouse are also under investigation. Autopsy results indicated fractures to the sternum, pelvis, wrist, and sacrum, consistent with a significant fall.
