Caixa Econômica Federal strike enters 19th day amid TST ruling

Employees of Caixa Econômica Federal are entering their 19th day of a national strike, primarily driven by disputes over the 'Saúde Caixa' health plan and the renewal of the 2026-2028 collective bargaining agreement. The bank has taken the dispute to the Superior Labor Court (TST) to resolve the impasse.

Following a preliminary ruling by Minister Maurício Godinho Delgado, branches have begun operating partially. The TST ordered that at least 60% of staff must remain active, either in person or via remote work, to maintain essential services such as FGTS management and social benefit payments. Failure to comply with this order subjects the bank to a daily fine of R$ 100,000.

The strike has caused significant economic ripples, with estimates suggesting that between 8,300 and 20,800 real estate financing operations may have been delayed. This impact is particularly felt in the 'Minha Casa, Minha Vida' program, as delays in bank approvals affect construction companies and homebuyers.

A final judgment on the collective labor dispute is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, which will determine the long-term resolution of the strike and the terms of the new labor agreement.
