Caixa Econômica Federal employees strike over health plan costs
Employees of Caixa Econômica Federal are in their seventh day of a national strike, which began on September 10 after workers rejected a proposed collective bargaining agreement (ACT). A new round of negotiations was scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, in São Paulo, following pressure from the National Confederation of Financial Sector Workers (Contraf-CUT).
The central point of disagreement is the Saúde Caixa health insurance plan. Workers are contesting proposed changes to the funding model that could increase costs for employees, retirees, and dependents. Specifically, the bank proposed increasing its contribution from 6.5% to 8%, while workers seek to maintain existing coverage models and demand higher bank participation in financing.
Other demands include salary increases above inflation, new hiring, and improved working conditions. While many bank branches across Brazil, including in Mato Grosso do Sul and Pará, have faced closures, the government has confirmed that social benefit payments, such as Bolsa Família, will continue according to the official schedule. Beneficiaries are encouraged to use digital channels like the Caixa Tem app to access funds.
