BBVA posts record €6bn profit as Mexico drives growth, while CaixaBank logs €3.2bn earnings
Spanish lender BBVA reported a net attributable profit of €6.051 billion for the first half of 2026, an 11.1 % rise year‑on‑year. The result was boosted by strong credit activity and a surge in its Mexican operations, which contributed €2.979 billion – roughly 44 % of total profit. BBVA also announced an extraordinary share‑buyback programme worth €2 billion, with the first €1 billion tranche scheduled to start on 5 August. The bank’s loan portfolio grew more than 60 % since the end of 2020, positioning BBVA as the European bank with the fastest loan‑book expansion.
In the same reporting period, CaixaBank posted a record net profit of €3.203 billion, up 8.5 % from the prior year. Growth was driven by a rise in credit volumes (up 8.2 % to €398.8 billion) and higher interest‑margin earnings, which increased 2 % to €5.390 billion. Service‑related income rose 7.4 %, and the bank declared a dividend of €0.961‑€1.281 per share. Both banks highlighted improved efficiency and strong capital positions as they move into the second half of the year.
