Cal State LA shifts to remote operations after cooling system failure

California State University, Los Angeles has moved to modified operations through the weekend following an equipment failure in its central chilled-water system. The malfunction has significantly limited the university's ability to provide air conditioning across campus buildings during a period of extreme heat and humidity.

University officials have recommended that all classes and operations that can be conducted remotely do so. While most academic activities have shifted online, the university is prioritizing essential services, including student housing and the financial aid office, which will continue to operate normally. Other facilities, such as campus recreational centers, are scheduled to close Friday and Saturday.

Spokesperson Erik Hollins stated that the cooling capacity was limited during an unprecedented spike in heat. The failure occurred as temperatures in the region reached near 100 degrees. Students reported difficult conditions on campus prior to the announcement, noting high temperatures in classrooms and common areas.
