Calabar police arrest 60 suspects following Watt Market assault
Authorities in Calabar, Cross River State, have initiated enforcement actions at Watt Market, displacing roadside traders who sell farm and locally produced goods. While officials state the directive aims to reduce traffic congestion and safety hazards, traders report significant economic hardship and allege they have previously been forced to pay unauthorized fees to task forces.
Following these enforcement efforts, sixty individuals were arrested for allegedly assaulting a police constable on duty. The incident occurred when the officer attempted to impound a commercial motorcycle. According to the Cross River State Police Command, the suspects—including roadside traders—allegedly overpowered the officer, tampered with his rifle, destroyed his uniform, and stole his mobile phone. The Commissioner of Police has directed that all culpable individuals be prosecuted.
