Calabria hits signature goal for 'Liberi Subito' assisted‑suicide law

In Calabria, the popular initiative “Liberi Subito” gathered more than 5,000 signatures, reaching the threshold to present a regional law that would guarantee clear procedures and timelines for medically assisted suicide. The achievement was highlighted by activist Marco Cappato and regional councilor Enzo Bruno, who said the result reflects citizens’ demand to implement the Constitutional Court’s 2019 ruling on the right to assisted death.

Support for assisted‑suicide legislation is expanding elsewhere. Piedmont has collected over 11,000 citizen signatures and 22 mayors have signed the proposal, while Emilia‑Romagna approved a regional law organising assisted‑suicide procedures, becoming the third Italian region to do so. In Puglia, the regional council passed a law promoting the use of open‑source software such as GNU/Linux in public administration, stressing transparency and citizen access.

Other regional actions include the reopening of amendment submissions for Calabria’s public‑transport law and a pre‑intesa between CISL Calabria and the regional government on participation in social‑policy decisions, illustrating a broader wave of legislative activity across Italian regions.
