Calabria anti-mafia prosecutors seek acquittals and new appeals

Major legal developments are unfolding in ongoing anti-mafia proceedings in Calabria, Italy. In the ‘Acheruntia’ investigation, the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) of Catanzaro has requested the acquittal of former regional agriculture assessor Michele Trematerra and former Acri mayor Luigi Maiorano. This request follows a trial that significantly reduced the original accusations, as the mafia aggravation factor—a central element of the initial probe into the Lanzino clan's influence in Acri—was found to be lacking in many instances.

Separately, the General Prosecutor's Office of Catanzaro has appealed to the Supreme Court regarding the ‘Imponimento’ maxi-trial. The prosecution is seeking a new appeal for 36 individuals, contesting various acquittals, statutes of limitations, or sentence reductions handed down in a September 2024 ruling. The investigation focused on the Anello clan of Filadelfia and its connections to other organized crime groups across the Vibonese, Lametino, and Catanzaro hinterland regions. The prosecution argues that the previous appellate court's decision contained contradictions and logical gaps regarding extortion, unfair competition, and mafia-related aggravations.
