Calabria Regional Council moves to repeal undersecretary law

The center-right majority in the Calabria Regional Council has proposed the repeal of a statutory amendment that would have allowed for the appointment of two undersecretaries and increased the number of regional assessors from seven to nine. This legislative reversal aims to cancel a consultative referendum scheduled for November 29, 2026.

Proponents of the repeal argue the move is a matter of fiscal responsibility. By canceling the referendum, the region can redirect the estimated 7 million euros earmarked for the vote toward subsidies to combat rising fuel costs. The legislative process for the repeal requires a second reading after a two-month interval, and the final outcome may also depend on a pending decision from the Council of State regarding the regional appeal against the referendum.

Separately, economic forecasts from the TEHA Group indicate significant growth for Calabria’s tourism sector. By 2026, tourist arrivals are projected to reach 2.3 million, with an estimated economic impact of 3.1 billion euros, representing approximately 7.6% of the regional GDP.
