Calabria confronts demographic slump as new perinatal mental‑health program launches
Regional councilor Ernesto Alecci presented a proposal in Soverato to create a dedicated diagnostic‑therapeutic‑assistance pathway for perinatal mental health. The plan would link maternity clinics, mental‑health departments, paediatric services and social workers to provide free screening and early treatment for postpartum depression and anxiety. Alecci said, “Non sei sola,” underscoring the aim to ensure families in Calabria are not left without support.
At the same time, ISTAT data highlight a sharp demographic decline in the region. In 2024 Calabria recorded a historic low of 12,679 births, a drop of 603 from the previous year, and the province of Cosenza now has the highest average age (46.7 years) in the region. Youth out‑migration and an aging population are raising concerns about the long‑term economic and social viability of the area.
