Calabria Council of State rejects regional referendum on undersecretaries

The Council of State has definitively rejected an appeal by the Calabria Region regarding a referendum for the establishment of regional undersecretaries. This ruling follows previous decisions by the TAR and the Central Office for the referendum at the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro, which had sided with the councilors promoting the consultation.

Opposition members, including the Movimento 5 Stelle, have criticized President Roberto Occhiuto, alleging that the creation of these roles was an attempt to distribute political positions to maintain a fragile majority. Critics argue the roles are unnecessary and costly, noting that each undersecretary would receive approximately 14,470 euros per month, with total annual costs for positions and support structures estimated at hundreds of thousands of euros.

Opposition leaders are calling for the formal abolition of the undersecretary figure through legislative action and demand that the allocated funds be redirected toward supporting local families and businesses facing economic difficulties.
