Calabria court suspends wood pigeon hunting pre-opening day
The Regional Administrative Court (TAR) of Calabria has issued a precautionary decree suspending the first scheduled pre-opening day for wood pigeon hunting, originally set for September 2. The decision follows an appeal by the animal rights association Earth, which challenged the 2026/2027 hunting calendar regarding six specific pre-opening dates in September.
The court did not rule on the merits of the case but cited “extreme gravity and urgency” to prevent potentially irreversible effects on wildlife while the full appeal is reviewed. A collective council meeting is scheduled for September 2 to determine the status of the remaining pre-opening dates. This legal challenge follows a shift in orientation from ISPRA regarding hunting seasons.
In Reggio Calabria, local authorities have announced the procedures for issuing 2026/2027 hunting licenses. Services are available at the Environment Sector offices in Palazzo CEDIR, as well as decentralized locations in Pellaro, Catona, and Ravagnese, with varying schedules and availability through the end of the hunting year.
