Calabria delays repeal of 2006 municipal merger law, mayor to be heard

Regional councillor Enzo Bruno, leader of the Tridico Presidente group, announced that the regional council has halted the rapid push to repeal Law 15 of 2006, which governs mergers and associations of municipalities in Calabria. The proposal to scrap the law will now be presented to the Institutional Affairs Commission on 7 August, and the mayor of Corigliano‑Rossano, Flavio Stasi, will be heard in a September hearing before any further debate in the council.

The opposition argued that the original attempt to bring the repeal directly to the plenary constituted a “blitz” that bypassed proper procedure and ignored the interests of affected towns. Law 15 / 2006 had provided extraordinary funding for newly formed municipalities, but the region has not allocated any resources since 2018, and the regional territorial re‑ordering programme linked to the law has never been adopted. Bruno said the next steps will examine why the funding stopped, assess the impact of the lack of resources, and consider whether the law needs updating rather than outright removal.
