Calabria, Emilia‑Romagna Fund Duchenne Care in Bologna Beyond Budget Caps

The Regions of Calabria and Emilia‑Romagna have signed an addendum to their November agreement to ensure that a group of roughly ten severely affected Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients receiving treatment at a specialised centre in Bologna will have their hospitalisation costs covered by Calabria even if spending exceeds the pre‑set budget caps. The measure aims to guarantee continuity of care after the transfer of the reference clinician and to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.

The two administrations also pledged to cooperate on developing specialist expertise in Calabria and to eventually open a local centre for these complex cases. Emilia‑Romagna will share diagnostic‑therapeutic pathways and organisational models, while the provisions remain in force until the new facility becomes operational. Additional flexibility is provided for neuro‑rehabilitation activities for the most critical cases during 2026.
