Calabria floods cause road collapses and widespread damage

Extreme weather in the Crotone hinterland has caused severe flooding, landslides, and structural damage across the Marchesato and Alto Marchesato regions. Record rainfall, peaking at approximately 235mm in Belvedere Spinello, triggered the overflowing of the Neto River, particularly near Altilia where embankments breached.

Infrastructure damage is significant. A large sinkhole caused by the heavy rains led to the collapse of the SP30 road connecting Belvedere Spinello to the SS107. The SS107 'Silana Crotonese' was also closed to traffic between the Altilia and Belvedere Spinello junctions due to debris and flooding. While no vehicles were in transit during the SP30 collapse and no injuries were reported, the area remains difficult to access.

Local industrial zones, including Polligrone and Barretta, are inundated with mud and water, threatening local agricultural greenhouses and business facilities. Emergency services, including the Vigili del Fuoco, Carabinieri, and Civil Protection, are on-site. Mayor Antonio Amato has activated the Operational Coordination Center (Coc) to manage the emergency.
