Calabria hosts major sculpture exhibitions and international symposiums

The Calabria region is hosting significant cultural events centered on sculpture and ancient heritage. The exhibition ‘Rara Avis – Bronze Portraits from Magna Graecia to the Contemporary’ by Antonio Affidato recently concluded at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria (MArRC). The exhibition featured nine bronze sculptures, including figures such as Pythagoras, Medusa, and Hercules, creating a dialogue between contemporary art and the ancient bronze traditions represented by the museum’s famous Riace Bronzes.

Additionally, the international monumental sculpture symposium ‘Mega Galmata’ is scheduled to take place in Brancaleone from September 26 to October 3, 2026. Organized by the Palazzo Spinelli Institute of Art and Restoration, the event will feature seven sculptors from Armenia, Poland, India, Ukraine, Greece, Iran, and Italy. Working with large blocks of Lecce stone, the artists will create works based on the theme ‘from stone to myth,’ including subjects such as the Minotaur, Medea, and Poseidon. The symposium includes public viewing sessions, conferences, and a final unveiling ceremony.
