Calabria infrastructure projects face risks from material shortages
Simone Celebre, General Secretary of Fillea CGIL Calabria, has warned that upcoming large-scale infrastructure projects in the Calabria region face potential blockage. Despite allocated resources and ready projects, the region lacks sufficient quarries and raw materials to meet construction needs.
Celebre noted that environmental constraints and the complexity of the territory limit the identification of new extraction areas. He emphasized that suitable areas should be treated as strategic for regional development rather than mere administrative tasks. Additionally, chronic bureaucratic delays and a lack of technical expertise in local government agencies are complicating project management.
Failure to address these issues may force companies to source materials from outside the region, which Celebre warns would increase costs for businesses and citizens while depriving Calabria of economic growth and employment opportunities.
