Calabria, Italy: Assassination attempt on suspected 'Ndrangheta leader

An assassination attempt in the municipality of Cassano allo Ionio, Calabria, has left one woman dead and a man seriously injured. Investigators believe the attack, involving approximately 30 shots fired with a Kalashnikov, was a targeted strike against 64-year-old Damiano Pepe, a figure linked to organized crime circles in northern Calabria.

During the attack, 60-year-old Silvana Sibarelli was killed, while Pepe survived after undergoing surgery. Authorities have placed Pepe under Carabinieri guard at a hospital. Investigators are examining whether the shooting is connected to long-standing conflicts between the Abbruzzese and Forastefano clans. There are growing concerns among officials that this incident could reignite a wave of violence within the 'Ndrangheta mafia organization.
