Calabria launches €1.5 million program to combat elderly loneliness

The regional government of Calabria approved a €1.5 million initiative called “La Calabria ti fa compagnia” to address social isolation among older residents. The scheme, promoted by regional welfare minister Pasqualina Straface, creates two new roles: an “Amico di Comunità”, a young volunteer aged 18‑35 who provides daily companionship and support for at least twelve months, and a “Custode Sociale di Comunità”, a professional caretaker who monitors neighborhoods to identify and intervene early when isolation threatens health.

Funding comes from the pre‑allocated economic‑development fund and is intended to strengthen social cohesion, reduce reliance on residential care, and offer training credits and a modest stipend to participating youths.
