Calabria launches artisanal sorbet project showcasing local berries
The regional initiative "Sorbetteria Calabria Straordinaria" aims to promote Calabria's biodiversity through a series of artisanal sorbets made from locally grown fruits such as bergamot, cedro, lemons, oranges, clementines, watermelon, figs, peaches, apricots, wild blackberries and fragile strawberries (fragoline di bosco). The project, presented at the regional citadel and organized by UNPLI Calabria with support from the Region, is directed artistically by master gelatiere Francesco Mastroianni. It will travel in August, stopping in Falerna (7‑8 Aug), Catanzaro (9‑10 Aug) and Montalto Uffugo (21 Aug). Regional Agriculture assessor Gianluca Gallo highlighted the strategic link between high‑quality agro‑food products, tourism and territorial identity.
A complementary article outlines Italy's rich variety of "frutti di bosco" – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, red, black and white currants, and gooseberries – noting their peak season from May to September and the main production zones in the northern alpine regions (Trentino‑Alto Adige, Piedmont, Veneto, Lombardy) as well as the Apennine areas of central and southern Italy. It stresses the nutritional benefits of these berries and gives culinary suggestions such as quick coulis, muffins, and pastries.
